Under 13 Track & Field Championships at Brighton

On a very warm day Brighton Phoenix had 21 competitors in the county under 13 championships at Withdean
Winning 1 Gold and 2 silver also there were a lot of PB'S anfd for the first time we entered a girls 4x100 relay
We had a fantastic day well done all.

Ashburnham Standard Distance Triathlon

Another great results for Tom Hopkins who won the Standard Distance Triathlon at Ashburnham. Sean Scott also raced and finished 4th but as we've come to expect, stormed the bike course with the fastest split of the day. Tom raced really well holding off Samuel Woods who finished only 25 seconds behind him. There were some other great results for other Phoenix athletes with some finishing first and second in their age group and Erica Martin finishing 3rd female!

A fantastic results for Wes Mechen who won the seaford sprint triathlon finishing in 01:09:21 just over 2 minutes ahead of second place! I also hear that he was carrying an injury! Will Flewett also had a great race finishing 17th overall and 1st in his age group. Laura Durn also had a great race finishing in 19th female and 2nd in her age group.

Nigel Herron finished 1st male vet showing that he can cycle and run even though his swimming is leaves less to be desired ;-). Ion had tweaked his back earlier in the morning. He struggled in T1 but recovered well to finish mid-pack.

Paule Kremer had a storming weekend winning the TriSpeed challenge consisting of a 10km run, a triathlon, and a duathlon. She managed some great times finishing on the podium in each with a PB in the 10k and is now vice national champ!

Both the Phoenix mans and womens team finished first in The Weakest Link. The men finished just over 2 minutes ahead of the 2nd place mens team and the women just over an astonishing 5 minutes ahead of the 2nd place womens team. I do not have details of the teams or their splits just yet but details will follow.

Well done to the U13 Phoenix members who travelled to Lewes to complete in the Under 13 League East Division. Some highlights are William Saunders finishing 1st in the Boys B Long Jump, Louisa Sanders in the Girls A 75m, Almi Neruaker in the Girls A 1000m (21seconds ahead of 2nd!!), and Naomi Fontyn in the Girls B 1000m.

The swim was 400M, the bike 25.5KM and the run 5KConditions were very windy which made it tough on the bike and much colder than forecast. A well organised event.

10k run was short (perhaps 8.5k)Quite windy, especially on the bike (quickest split was 1.07)
Nige Herron 4th and 1st Male 40+ 2:07:12 (0:16:16/0:0:35/1:14:25/0:0:18:/0:35:37)
Erica Martin 1st Woman 2:15:11 (0:16:47/0:0:49/1:20:29/0:0:28:/0:36:36)Erica was 2nd woman off the bike but ran the leader down to clinch first spot.
Nigel was 5th off the bike, quickly overtook 4th but was a mile behind top 3.
Nevertheless as they were all under 40, he took 1st vet prizeWell done both

This is part of the West Sussex Fun Run league and is always popular with Phoenix young athletes who can race in their appropriate age category.
Performance of the day was by Almi Nerurkar who set a new course record for the U13 girls 1500M. 5:11 is the new mark. Clubmates Holly Luscombe and Izzie Whitelegg were second and third respectively.
The other winner was Chloe Watson in the U15 girls 2,300M. Only one other competitor but Chloe ran a fine 8:52 non-the-less.
Second places were taken by Deaglan Shinn in the U13 boys 1500M and Milly Dickenson in the U11 girls 1500M.
Of course there were may other young Phoenix runners taking part.
In the adult 5K event there were just two competitors from Phoenix. Andy Bone came 29th in 19:00 and Andrew Haig (running for Southwick Strollers) came 116th in 22:06.

Paule Kremer and Ben Tickner raced over the weekend in Luxembourg and both finished well. Ben finished 2nd overall only missing 1st by 4 seconds and Paule finished 5th female and 1st in her category. Although they entered under Paule's home town tri club Trilux, we have it under good authority that they wore their Phoenix vests with pride!

A good results for Sean Scott who, after coming out of the water in 57th, managed the 3rd fastest bike split and 4th fastest run to finish 6th overall. Also congratulations to Liz Halliday finishing 1st in her age group!

Wednesday 15th May was the first league meet of the Sussex Under 13 Athletics Competition 2013 held at Lewes Leisure Centre. The weather was warm, not like the day before of rain. We had a fantastic turn-out of families to support our team, we took 26 girls to this meet which is the most we have ever taken. We were able to enter 5 girls’ relay teams. We also took a boys team of 7.Both teams did extremely well finishing 3rd overall on the evening and we had 2 event on the night. Unfortunately Jon Pike's chain came off twice during the event causing him to stop twice. Steve Kane of Brighton Excelsior CC won the event in 55m08s

Brighton Phoenix Open/BMC races

Some fantastic competing was seen at the Phoenix Open Track Meeting at Withdean Stadium, May 8th. Athletes of all ages competed in events from 100 metres, 800 metres, 1500 metres, 3 km and steeplechase runs to standing long jump and long jump.
Phoenix was out in force with record numbers of runners in the junior races.
In the closed 100m Sophia Warner narrowly missed the qualifying time for the World Para Athletics Championships with what was still a great run.
In the very competitive 800 metre BMCA race Matt Favers showed great ability to accelerate at pace in the last 50 metres to win.Yet further success, in the form of personal bests, was seen for Billy White in the A race and Spencer Thomas looking good to win the B. And there was yet another outstanding front run by Almi Nerurkar in the under 13 girls 800 metres.

While most were enjoying the sun this bank holiday weekend, Rick Taub completed the Sussex Living Marathon Weekend which consisted of three races over three days. Two 10mile runs over the weekend and one 10km run on the bank holiday. The athletes were blessed with fantastic weather in comparison to the near artic conditions last year. In the long course Tom Hopkins and Malcolm Hughes finished 1st male and 1st male supervet. Will Flewett also finished 1st in his age group. Sean Scott also just missed out on 3rd after some confusion between a motorist and a marshal while exiting T1 resulting in Sean losing a shoe and missing a flying mount onto the bike. Wes Mechen also missed out on a 3rd place after forgetting his race number number out of T1 and having to run back into transition. Belated results up from the Haywards Heath Harriers Open! Many great results for Phoenix members with podium finishes in quite a few races. Another weekend, another marathon! Once again, the runners of VLM were blessed with perfect weather to tackle the 26.2 mile course and with Mo Farah pacing, the atmosphere would have been electric. Some great running from the Phoenix members with four finishing within three hours.
