    Brooks Brighton 10K

    Sun 15 Nov 2015

There was a heartening turnout, both male and female, for this popular event. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't in a mood to celebrate. Lowering skies and a fierce wind coming in from the west made the race doubly tough. Having said that, there were some tasty performances and congratulations must go (again!) to Paul Whelpton for his category first. Congratulations too to second claimer Daryll Hards for his superb 10th place in a time of 33:36.

Four of you entered as 'Phoenix' which may upset the team results. Please remember, that for all events including multisport, our team name is 'Brighton Phoenix'

Brooks Sussex Cross Country League Race 1: Goodwood

    Sat 17 Oct 2015

A big turnout for the first race of the League, especially among the women and girls' teams; it was great to see a few XC first-timers too.  There were a number of stand-out performances: a 1-2-3 in the U13 girls race for Milly Dickinson, Eloise Nicoll and Alice Wright, a first place for Oliver Johnson (U17 men) and Elishka Coupar (U17 women) and a third place (vets men) for Dave Carter. Paul Whelpton and Andrew Haig were in familiar territory as first M60 and first M70 respectively.

Phenomenal stuff from our two young athletes competing in the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa. Archie Davis took an excellent fourth place in the 1500m, while Toby Harries won both his heats in fast times.  His silver medal in the final was won in a wind-assisted 20.56 (w+2.6), exactly the same time as the gold medal winner.

Archie also stepped up to the plate as a late sub for the sprint relay team, helping England to 4th place.

Charlie Grice was selected to represent Great Britain in Beijing, and made it through his heat and his semi-final (4th fastest) to earn the right to line up in a World Championship Final aged only 21. He was the only European in the final.  The last time a Brighton Phoenix athlete ran such an important race, Charlie wasn't even born. A huge credit and a huge inspiration to his club and his country. I want to run like Charlie when I grow up and I'm twice his age.
