Sussex U13 league
Tue 25 May 2010
We finished 4th overall in the team event which was pleasing considering we had only 6 athletes competing on the night, which is significant when you compare that with the number of competing athletes from the other teams (Brighton 25, Lewes 22, Hastings 22, Eastbourne 9).
Coach Quentin Davis is hoping for increased turnouts at Hove Park Races on June 6th and the next league meeting at Lewes on June 15th.

White Peak Trail Marathon
Sat 22 May 2010
More and more Phoenix people seem to be taking an interest in fell or trail running. Brian Friend tackled the White Peak marathon in Derbyshire (a trail race) on a sizzling hot day and fared pretty well against all those tough Northerners. Brian finished in 25th place in a time of 3:47:55 (second M50)

London Marathon 2010
Sun 25 Apr 2010
Phoenix fielded just four runners this year (Brighton Marathon having attracted a good few). Andy Bone has been just outside that magic 3 hour mark for the last few years (3:02 in 2009) but having trained with single-minded dedication was rewarded with a magnificent 2:54:58 for 715th place. Tom Farsides also smashed decisively through the barrier with a pb by 3:40 to record 2:57:23 (858th). Daren Elliot knocked about 37 minutes from his 2009 time to record 3:19:00 2948th and Lance Bellers running his first marathon, and with training interrupted by injury, managed an impressive 3:27:35 (3954th). Well done everybody.

Brighton Marathon
Sun 18 Apr 2010
Great weather, great organisation, great support. The inaugural Brighton Marathon was a success beyond most people's expectation. And Phoenix featured large on the day. Second claim member, Tom Naylor was, with Tim Hutchins, the event organiser – so hearty congratulations to them. Olympic Champion and club founder Steve Ovett started the race. Mike Whyte and Tim Woodman fulfilled their pacing roles to perfection and, of course, 29 of you took part and came up with some quality performances. We had four runners under three hours led by returning member Neil Boniface (7th in 2:41:23). Mike Greenwood ran the best judged race of all finishing 18th in a time of 2:50:13 which shaves his previous best by some 25 minutes!. Good to see Daryl Hards back in shape and although he slipped back in the closing miles managed an impressive 2:54:36. Max-Patrick Lippert was supposed to be running the Boston Marathon but his plans fell to ash (of the Icelandic variety) but he was offered a last minute place in the race and responded with an even-paced 2:59:42 for 90th position. As you can see from the list here, a further 18 Phoenix athletes finished under four hours with everyone safely home by five. As if that weren't enough, Charlie Grice won the mini mile event. Last year Charlie broke Steve Ovett's 800m Brighton schoolboy record, taking it down to 1:55.80. On Sunday he got to meet the great man in person. Archie Davis was first U13 boy in the mini mile.

Reading Half Marathon
Sun 21 Mar 2010
The Reading Half Marathon seems to attract more and more Phoenix runners each year. Its a fast well-organised mass participation (12000+) event and as such a good try out for the Spring Marathons. Eleven Phoenix Athletes all performed well. Josh Guilmant was our first finisher – 15th in 1:10:12 with Dave Carter (25th 1:12:24), James Miles (57th 1:15:55) and Garry Judd (88th 1:18:09). Andy Bone (120th) broke the 80 minute barrier for the first time with a pb 1:19:54 followed by Tom Farsides (297th 1:25:49), Erica Martin (299th 1:25:47), Lance Bellers (642nd 1:30:23 PB), Anita Jones (1051st 1:34:40 PB), Malcolm Kemp (1136th 1:35:27) and Marc Huws (4548th 1:48:25).

Its reckoned to add a good couple of minutes to your time, so some good performances here. Andrew Neighbour was first home 190th in 1:29:45 followed by Terry Avey (461st 1:37:07), Faye McClelland (1123rd 1:47:04) and Debbie Evers (1764th 1:56:05).

English Schools Cross Country Champs
Sun 21 Mar 2010
The English Schools XC Champs took place at a wet and muddy Heaton Park in Manchester. Phoenix once again had athletes running for Sussex. Robbie Fitzgibbon (junior boys) and Beth Kidger (intermediate girls) both came in the first third of the field with solid runs. In the senior boys Finn McNally had to retire with back problems when he was well placed. Sam Wade came through in that event with his best run of the season. In the intermediate boys, Will Durkin had a great race, placing well within the top 100 in his first year in the age group. Run of the day came from Charlie Grice, who came an excellent 9th in the intermediate race, making him first reserve for the England team for the Home Countries International.

Cold, wet and windy with race organisation that, well, just fell apart at the seams. The question has to be asked whether the race can sustain such numbers (6000+ finishers). Having said that, this was a good day for Phoenix. To quote The Argus:
...Dave Carter helped Phoenix scoop the team prize ahead of B&H. Carter came seventh with Bruce Faulkner, Darryll Hards and Max-Patrick Lippert making up the victorious quartet...
Not only that but Archie Davis won the junior 800m race and Max Pickard the junior 1M event

Sussex XC League 4 - Lancing
Sat 20 Feb 2010
As a lot of our runners were doing the Brighton Half it left another poor turnout from Phoenix, there were just 5 scoring as senior men. Finn McNally(U20) came an excellent 3rd, Tom Coates 11th then vets Malcolm Hughes 28th, Nigel Herron 31st and Simon Roberts 76th. Needless to say we slipped down the league tables to 4th in the seniors and 6th in the vets. Finn was 2nd U20 and that gave him a Silver in the individual league.
Ananda Mello-Costa was our sole senior lady runner.
In the juniors Billy White was 2nd in the U13boys and so took Bronze in the individual league. The U15 boys finished 3rd in the team league.

Sussex XC league (3) Bexhill
Sat 16 Jan 2010
A postponed event which was wet and muddy. In the circumstances there was a mixed turnout to report. Well done to the U13 girls, U15 boys and the senior/vet men for fielding complete teams.
Excellent performances in the junior races from Jodie Mann (12th U13G) Billy White and Archie Davis (3rd and 11th U13B) Robbie Fitzgibbon (6th U15B). The under 15 boys are still holding silver medal position.
There were just two senior women competing (impressive runs from Liz Durman 10th and Anita Jones 37th) but inevitably the team has now dropped to fourth place in division 2.
There were Just two senior men running backed up by four vets. Tom Coates was lead scorer with an excellent 20th place. Vet, Bruce Faulkner was next scorer in 26th. Although in fourth spot there are just 60 points to make up if we can field our top team in the final event at Lancing. The vets too are in fourth just 4 points away from bronze position. Easily attainable with a full turn out at Lancing.

Josh Guilmant (5th) and Pat Davoren (6th) were top scorers for the men with James Miles (26th), Tom Coates (27th), Max-Patrick Lippert (30th) and Bruce Faulkner (36th) completing the A team. Sophie Coleman (2nd), Erica Martin (12th), Liz Durman (20th) and Anita Jones (46th) made up the women's A team. Katie KIdger, who has transferred to Phoenix, was 19th but is not yet eligible to score for us. Looks like she is going to be a great asset for the women's team.
The junior age groups were represented thinly with no entries at all for U13 and U15 girls and complete teams only for U15 boys (silver team medal – William Dukin individual silver) and U17 boys (bronze team medal – Charlie Grice individual gold). Beth Kidger took individual bronze for the U17 girls and Finn McNally silver for U20 men. Sophie Coleman (second in the senior women's race) took gold for U20 women.

Over 60 Men Victorious at Dene Park
On a bright Sunday afternoon the over 60 men's team of Andrew Field, Andrew Haig and, celebrating his birthday, Pat Kearney finished 2nd , 4th and 10th respectively to easily retain the title won last year with a 16 point lead over Brighton in 2nd and Chichester 3rd, a further 3 points back.
The over 50's and over 40's were missing some key runners due to injury but both teams still put in strong performances to register 4th places in their races.

Crowborough 10K
Sun 29 Nov 2009
The last race in this year's Grand Prix series and probably the most challenging of the 10Ks. Add three minutes to your usual time is what one hears. Bearing that in mind - some useful performances here. Lance was actually race leader for, ooh, three seconds before settling for an excellent 17th place.
17th Lance Bellers 41:06, 38th Terry Avey 43:40, 53rd Andrew Haig 45:03, 70th Nathan Broderick 46:28, 194th Jewel O'Connel 54:01
