  • Sussex Grand Prix

    Chichester 10 K

    Sun 3 Feb 2013

This was a fantastic outing for Phoenix at the opening Sussex Grand Prix event of the year. Jon Pepper was just a second behind the winner with Ian Leitch (4th) and Josh Guilmant (9th) winning the team event with the lowest points score anyone can remember. Not only that but Phoenix scored 10th and 20th with their B and C teams.

    Sussex XC league (3) Bexhill

    Sat 15 Dec 2012

Shock, horror. 16 men turned up to run the senior race!. Was it the fine weather and firm going that attracted such numbers?. Like heck it was. It was cold, blustery, wet and like a swamp underfoot. Still, mustn't complain – there were some great performances leaving us well positioned in a good few categories.

    U13 Girls
The star team this year. Winners on the day and consolidated as gold medal team overall. Congratulations to Naomi Fonteyn 2nd, Almi Nerurkar 4th, Chloe Watson 6th, Charlotte Matthews 8th and Izzie Whitelegg 16th.

    U15 Girls
    No representation!

    U17/U20/Sen/Vet women
Second on the day and second overall by just 5pts, the women are well poised for promotion to division 1. They need an optimum turnout for the final race. Vets are a modest 12th. Erica Martin 19th, Megan Bradford 22nd and Paule Kremer 38th were scorers, ably backe up by Hildi Mitchell 61st and Liz Halliday 64th.

    U13 boys
Well done to Jack Etherton for coming a handy 24th. With no backup that meant a lowly 14th place and the team are languishing in 10th spot overall.

    U15 boys
A fine win for this well-organised team. Overall they are 4th but within easy reach of bronze. Archie Davis 2nd, Matt Berridge 8th, Oliver Johnson 11th, Harry Swindells 20th, Chris McGarry 21st, Will Russell 22nd. Great teamwork guys.

    U17 men
Another terrific team effort and a wonderful front-running win by Robbie Fitzgibbon resulted in second position on the day and  first place overall by just 10 points. All to play for guys. Robbie Fitzgibbon 1st, Jake Alger 5th, Sam Kitchen 9th.

    U20/sen/vet men
Too many to mention everyone but turnout and performances were uniformly impressive. Ben Tickner 3rd, Daryll Hards 6th, Tom Hopkinson 8th, Jose Luceron 16th,  Bruce Warren (Vet 50) 30th and Robin Fitzgibbon (V40) 43rd. scored for the senior A team. Bruce, Robin and Adam Tribe 46th scored for the vet A team. There were A, B, C, and D teams in both categories. Both teams were second on the day with the seniors comfortably in silver position overall and the vets needing to make up just 6 points to move in to silver spot at the final event. In fact the deficit of 23 points for gold is not impossible.

    Downland Devil 9M

    Sun 2 Dec 2012

As the name suggests, this is not an easy race. There were 236 finishers.

The very much in form Phoenix vet Donald Maclellan was our only representative and he took the race by storm, winning in a time of 1:00:26.

To give an idea of the quality of this performance, the second placed runner was 46 seconds adrift and the third almost two minutes behind.

    Great run Donald.

  • Fun Run

    Crowborough 10K

    Sun 2 Dec 2012

This was the last Grand Prix event of the year and also one of the Sussex 10k Challenge series. Correspondingly, it attracted a strong field of just under 400 athletes. Notoriously the 2-lap course has two kilometre long hills and a brook to be forded twice. This year we were spared the latter and diverted over a footbridge. Either way these excellent performances need to be seen in context.

Eight Phoenix runners competed and six of us came away with medals of one sort or another.

The stand out run was from Phoenix's Ben Tickner who won the race in 33:30, a full minute and a half ahead of Lewes' s David Bradford.

    Other Phoenix results:
    6th Pat Davoren 36:26 (5th M senior)
    12th James Atkinson 36:59
    36th Stuart Pal 41:35
    38th Lance Bellers 41:45
    65th Terry Avey 43:28 (1st V5)
    73rd Andrew Haig 44:04 (1st V6)
    91 Paule Kremer 45:30

Silver team medals – Ben, Pat, James, Stuart

    Brighton 10K

    Sun 18 Nov 2012

Great turnout for the club and some fine performances in near perfect racing conditions. Donald for example took well over a minute of his previous pb. First things first though. It's incredibly difficult to locate results when you terrible people are registering under all sorts of club names. BRIGHTON PHOENIX is correct for all events, running or multisport. We had Brighton Phoenix Tri, Phoenix AC and no club name at all. Important because this race was the Sussex 10k championship. If I haven't spotted you (or your pb), please email.

There were 2729 finishers. The men's race was won by Paul Martelletti in 30 minutes dead and the women's race by Caryl Jones in 32:31 – a new course record.

Sussex team and individual placings will be added as soon as available.

The positions are gun and the times chip.

County medals are now confirmed. Brighton Phoenix were bronze medalists in the team competition (Guilmant, Miles, Atkinson). We might have done better but the placings suggest that not everyone was correctly registered.

    Phoenix Races

    Sun 11 Nov 2012

We couldn't have hoped for better conditions: bright sunshine and not a breath of wind. It meant that numbers of entries were mantained with 258 young athletes competing. The Friday-Ad mile featured 23 adult racers.

It has to be said that the organising team under the leadership of Dave Powell and Any Bone did a fantastic job and the day seemed to go off without a hitch.

There were plenty of Phoenix vests to be seen racing and much success by our own athletes. There were winners in the U9 boys (Lukas Nerurkar), U11 girls (Milly Dickinson), U13 girls (Almi Nerurkar), U15 boys (Archie Davis) and U17 men (Billy Wright). The winner of the Friday-Ad mile was Robbie Fitzgibbon who set a new course record in a time of 4:34.

    Beachy Head Marathon

    Sat 27 Oct 2012

A tough off road marathon with lots of climbing and descending over the downs which this year saw a small group from Phoenix running on a very cold and windy day, although at least the Sun was out.

Great run by Jon to get inside  the top 10 with an impressive time only 11 minutes behind the winner.
