Sussex Cross Country League 2: Lancing
Sat 12 Nov 2016
The rain and mud did not dampen team Phoenix's spirits at the weekend - more good efforts including Beth Kidger's outstanding win in the women's race and Josh Eeles in the U17 men. Still a few teams in contention for medals so we need to keep a strong turnout at the next two races.

Poppy run 5k
Sun 6 Nov 2016
Well done to Eddie Harrison who took part in the British Legion Poppy Run in Preston Park. It's a 5k untimed fun run to mark Remembrance Day and raise money for the Poppy Appeal and Eddie took great pleasure in being the first junior runner over the finish line and in 7th place over all.
Any other Phoenix runners who participated - please get in touch and we'll add you here.

East Sussex Cycling Association Reliability Trial
Sun 6 Nov 2016
"Not a race": Reliability Trials are, like Audax events, not races, but rather long distance rides which emphasise fitness, self reliance and navigational skills.
How Reliable a cyclist are you?
- Fitness - Do you think you are fit enough to complete the course in your sellected time?
- Self Reliance - Are your skills, equipment & machine reliable enough to deal with any mechanical or climatic conditions which could occur on the day?
- Navigational Skills - Can you successfully navigate the course, passing through all the required controls using the directions provided?
The proof of a reliable cyclist, in the spirit of Reliability Trials is someone who can answer yes to the above 3 questions!
A reliable cyclist is not someone who trains numerous times before the event on a pre-published route. Neither is it someone who follows their handlebar mounted satellite navigation system around a way-marked route on the day of the event (there are plenty of sportives throughout the year for cyclists who want to do that).
Our Phoenix cyclists had to ride 50 miles in 3 hours, finisihing within 2:50-3:10 hours. Jon Wright was spot-on with 3h, Jim Whitelegg a safe 2:59, and Andy Bone came in at 2:52 - but did he have to backpedal for a bit to avoid finishing too quick?
Phoenix Team came 5th overall.

The Steepdown Challenge
Sun 30 Oct 2016
This West Sussex Fun Run League 5 miler does what it says on the tin. A steady 3 mile ascent on downland track, followed by a teeth-rattling descent.
Three phoenixers ran, albeit two in disguise.

77th Will Russell 37:06 (running for Portslade Hedgehoppers)

Sussex Cross Country League 1: Goodwood
Sat 15 Oct 2016
The first race in the county cross country league saw a huge turnout from Phoenix and some very eye-catching individual and team results. Many teams are in a medal position after this fixture, with the U17 women and just-promoted senior women topping their tables. There are still three races to go, but with continued good turnout and gutsy running we could pick up our best haul for some time.
