Putbos Memorial Leon Buyle
Sat 4 Jun 2016
The Putbosstadion Vlierzele, Oordegem in Belgium, saw the lads from Brighton Phoenix all recording new PB’s in impressive style.
Robbie Fitzgibbon, who was fresh from a 5-week training stint in Flagstaff, Arizona with Mo Farah, Matt Centrowitz and Charlie Grice, became only the 25th U23 to dip under 3:40 for the 1500m. He was placed third in race two. This gives him the qualifying time for the U23 European Champs in Poland in a few weeks time and extra determination to qualify for the European Senior Championships in Amsterdam.
Archie Davis had posted another 1500m PB (3:45.43) in race 1, to move ever closer to the standard for the same Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Spencer Thomas was 1st in the 8oom 'After Programme' securing his long awaited World Junior Championships qualifying time with 1:48.24.
Sensational running guys.
All three runners will have the chance to improve their case for selection in a series of fast races later this month.

South Downs Way Relay
Sat 4 Jun 2016
The South Downs Way Relay is so popular that Phoenix was reduced to three teams this year from our usual four, to make room for newcomers. The race is limited to sixty teams of six, each with a support van and driver/navigator. The 100 miles from Eastbourne to Winchester is divided into eighteen legs so each runner does three during the course of a long extraordinary day.
The Phoenix A team (Donald Maclellan, Jose Muzio, Jim Whitelegg, James Miles, Alex Bonzi, Mark Cossey and driver/navigator Louise Gregory) suffered bad luck on the first leg with James injuring his ankle and unable to continue. Out of the race as such, they voted to carry on with their allotted legs but with the pressure off "running free". This proved to be a wise choice allowing Jose to break the club senior record for leg 5 and Donald to break the vet's records for legs 6 and 18!
The Phoenix B team (Pete Goodman, Jon Wright, Malcolm Kemp, Richard Thompson, Andrew Neighbour, Anita Jones and driver/navigator Sue Hudson) ended the day as silver medalists in that category, running 11:38.52 just 10 minutes behind the leaders.
The Phoenix women's team (Erica Martin, Bobby Searle, Liz Halliday, Hannah Carey, Kath Harnett, Caz Garrett with driver navigator Hildi Mitchell) were seventh out of 10 in their category in a respectable 13:33.55.
Well done everybody
