    Lewes Downland 10M

    Sun 2 Oct 2011

In previous years this race has been run in biting winds and teeming October rain but this year's conditions can best be described as 'mediterranean' with temperatures in the 80s. Seems to have encouraged a good few Phoenix athletes to the start line with eleven making the effort. Jake Elliot was the first home which given that he is still under 17 and that this is way over his usual distance is a great result.

    18th Jake Elliot 1:10:35
    20th Joe Francis 1:11:05
    35th Jim Whitelegg 1:15:59
    46th Daren Elliot 1:17:40
    109th Liz Halliday 1:28:48
    146th Neil Foley 1:36:44
    149th Richard Thompson 1:37:17

    Phoenix 10K

    Wed 20 Jul 2011

The inaugural running of the Phoenix 10K was an undoubted success. Not only did the race sell-out but initial feedback from competitors is very positive. With chip-timing and well -organised facilities such as toilet provision, baggage tent, massage, PA (great work Tim) etc, the oveall impression was highly favourable and bodes well for the future.

Congratulations have to go to Andy Bone who has steered the event with consumate organisational skill. The marshalling and bike-leading too was excellent with Liz Halliday, Eleanor Moore, Malcolm Kemp and others assuming responsibility. Particularly heartening was the raucus reception committee of junior athletes, organised by John Marinko, at the 5K turnaround point.

It also turned out to be a high quality race with a sprint to the finish with Dean Lacey of Cambridge Harriers just edging out Phoenix's Ian Leitch by three seconds. Josh Guilmant of Phoenix was just 30 seconds back in third place. Phoenix won the men's team prize (Leitch, Guilmant, Hopkins, Hards). A special mention too for Terry Avey who's running has transformed this season. He was first in the over-60 category against a qualty field in that age-group, with a superb sub-40 run. Amazingly, this is his eighteenth age-group first this season.

In the women's race Emma Richards of Hailsham Harriers was run away winner in 37:35, a substantial PB for her. The next two places were fought out by two V45 athletes. Elspeth Turner of Horsham Blue Stars was second in 38:17 and Cathy Ulliot of Brighton and Hove was third in 40:13.

Thirty-one of us competed and here are our results (chip times). Well done everybody.

    Bewl 15M

    Sun 3 Jul 2011

One of the most beautful races in the Sussex calender, the heat and distance nevertheless made it quite a challenge. Most of the route is on footpath around the shores of the Bewl Water reservoir, finishing at a sunlit meadow where, to the accompanyment of a brass band, the 600+ rrunners were treated to free refreshments including their justly famous selection of homemade cake. Bliss.

    46th Daren Elliot 1:48:30
