Sussex XC league (3) Bexhill
Sat 15 Jan 2011
It's the boys teams that are still keeping the Phoenix flag flying. The U13 boys fielded 5 runners with Archie Davis (3rd), Reuben Hoyte (4th), Isaac Wright (9th) running exceptionally well, with Joe Lillie and Will Russell in support. Winners on the day, the team have now moved into bronze position overall. The U15 boys have jumped from 7th to 4th overall with excellent runs from Billy White (3rd), Sam Kitchen (14th) and Luke Reynolds (21st). Thats where it stops with the under 17 boys without a team and no longer featuring in the tables.
Well done to Charlotte Matthews, Elorah Mann (U13G), Jodie Mann, Amber Muir (U15G) for strong performances. Its always going to be difficult to trouble the medals without full scoring teams. The U15s, though, have moved up from 9th to 8th place.
Then – oh dear – the senior turnout was dire. The women first. TheU17 runner Megan Lillie, was the ONLY Phoenix runner. She ran brilliantly for 30th place but in division 2, the women's team has now plunged from third to fifth position overall.
The men too were unable to provide a complete scoring team with James Miles (an excellent 9th) the only senior runner. As ever it was down to the four vets who turned up to provide a measure of respectability. Bruce Warren (33rd), Nigel Herron (48th) and Malcolm Hughes (69th) ran well, with O65 runner Andrew Haig (91st) unexpectedly having to contribute to the scoring. Inevitably the seniors have slipped from third to 4th overall but with 34 points separating them from bronze could still get among the medals at Lancing. The vets have slipped a place to 5th but it's very tight with just 11 points separating them from bronze-placed Arena 80.THIS FROM U13 BOYS MANAGER QUENTON DAVIS:
…the U13 Boys now lie in bronze position in the team event overall. Statistically, we have not yet fielded our strongest 3 runners in any of the first 3 matches. Brighton & Hove have pretty much run away with the gold medal but Chichester, currently in 2nd place, are now only 15 points ahead of the Phoenix Boys. After the great performances on Saturday at Bexhill, we took the team event over Chichester by 12 points. With Archie Davis now looking like he is back to full fitness and the other boys all improving with every match, particularly Reuben, Matt Berridge and Isaac Wright, if we manage to field our strongest teams at Lancing, it may all get very interesting indeed. Whatever the outcome, this has been an outstanding cross country season for the Phoenix U13 Boys, who are pretty much all in their first season and with the exception of Will Russell, all eligible to compete in this age group again.

Sussex XC league (1) Goodwood
Sat 23 Oct 2010
And they're off! Cross-country league 1 took place at Goodwood on Saturday 23 October. The good news is that Phoenix were represented in all age groups, both male and female. The less good news is that The U17 boys, the U15 girls, the U13 girls and the senior women were short of a full scoring team. The points are made up by taking the number of runners in each race and adding ten points to complete the scoring and that is a heavy penalty!
The U13 boys are in a handy 6th place, within striking distance of the medals. Archie Davis ran an excellent race for 4th with the ever reliant Matt Berridge and Will Russell backing him up. The U13 girls are in 11th place with Charlotte Matthews and Madeline Houghton running solidly.
In the U15 categories Jody Mann was only representative for the girls, running well for 12th. The U15 boys with four runners led by Billy White (3rd) were second team.
In the U17 boys event Charlie Grice cruised to a well-judged win with Will Durkin impressing for 5th place. They are 5th as a team.
The senior women would have scored well with a third runner to back up Liz Durman (12th) and Deb Friis (59th). As it happened the cavalry in the guise of Anita and Rachel arrived just too late for the start. So – they are languishing in division 2 for the moment.
The senior men were short of a few lead runners for one reason or another but put in a spirited performance with Finn McNally (6th), Max Pickard (7th), new member Tom Hopkins (9th) and James Miles (16th) putting us into an excellent 2nd position.
The vets led by Garry Thayre (51st) are in 5th but just a handfull of points away from 3rd spot.
Three to go and all to play for as they say, but let's complete those teams folks.

Sun 21 Mar 2010
The English Schools XC Champs took place at a wet and muddy Heaton Park in Manchester. Phoenix once again had athletes running for Sussex. Robbie Fitzgibbon (junior boys) and Beth Kidger (intermediate girls) both came in the first third of the field with solid runs. In the senior boys Finn McNally had to retire with back problems when he was well placed. Sam Wade came through in that event with his best run of the season. In the intermediate boys, Will Durkin had a great race, placing well within the top 100 in his first year in the age group. Run of the day came from Charlie Grice, who came an excellent 9th in the intermediate race, making him first reserve for the England team for the Home Countries International.

Sat 20 Feb 2010
As a lot of our runners were doing the Brighton Half it left another poor turnout from Phoenix, there were just 5 scoring as senior men. Finn McNally(U20) came an excellent 3rd, Tom Coates 11th then vets Malcolm Hughes 28th, Nigel Herron 31st and Simon Roberts 76th. Needless to say we slipped down the league tables to 4th in the seniors and 6th in the vets. Finn was 2nd U20 and that gave him a Silver in the individual league.
Ananda Mello-Costa was our sole senior lady runner.
In the juniors Billy White was 2nd in the U13boys and so took Bronze in the individual league. The U15 boys finished 3rd in the team league.

Sat 16 Jan 2010
A postponed event which was wet and muddy. In the circumstances there was a mixed turnout to report. Well done to the U13 girls, U15 boys and the senior/vet men for fielding complete teams.
Excellent performances in the junior races from Jodie Mann (12th U13G) Billy White and Archie Davis (3rd and 11th U13B) Robbie Fitzgibbon (6th U15B). The under 15 boys are still holding silver medal position.
There were just two senior women competing (impressive runs from Liz Durman 10th and Anita Jones 37th) but inevitably the team has now dropped to fourth place in division 2.
There were Just two senior men running backed up by four vets. Tom Coates was lead scorer with an excellent 20th place. Vet, Bruce Faulkner was next scorer in 26th. Although in fourth spot there are just 60 points to make up if we can field our top team in the final event at Lancing. The vets too are in fourth just 4 points away from bronze position. Easily attainable with a full turn out at Lancing.

The turn out of seniors was terrific, with A and B teams scoring for both the men's and women's races. In brilliantly sunny but freezing conditions we did well to take bronze team medals in both events.
Josh Guilmant (5th) and Pat Davoren (6th) were top scorers for the men with James Miles (26th), Tom Coates (27th), Max-Patrick Lippert (30th) and Bruce Faulkner (36th) completing the A team. Sophie Coleman (2nd), Erica Martin (12th), Liz Durman (20th) and Anita Jones (46th) made up the women's A team. Katie KIdger, who has transferred to Phoenix, was 19th but is not yet eligible to score for us. Looks like she is going to be a great asset for the women's team.
The junior age groups were represented thinly with no entries at all for U13 and U15 girls and complete teams only for U15 boys (silver team medal – William Dukin individual silver) and U17 boys (bronze team medal – Charlie Grice individual gold). Beth Kidger took individual bronze for the U17 girls and Finn McNally silver for U20 men. Sophie Coleman (second in the senior women's race) took gold for U20 women.

Sat 3 Oct 2009
Isn't life surprising. We've been commenting lately about relatively few women competing in running events and then bingo! – an unheard of four teams are entered for this event. What's more we've shown what we can do – with the A team (Erica Martin, Sundai Boulton and Liz Durman) winning a neck and neck battle with Horsham Blue Star for first spot. The B team(Angel Collins, Rachel Phelps, Erica Martin) would have placed seventh but for Erica running a second leg. As it was the C team (Deb Friis, Faye McClelland, Liz Halliday) were placed 9th and the D team (Hildi Mitchell, Sue Hudson and Ananda Mello-Costa) placing 13th.
The senior men also triumphed with Dave Carter, Charlie Grice, James Miles and Finn McNally running themselves into second place.
Elsewhere Archie Davis and Billie White ran great legs in the U13 boys event but lacked a third runner for what might have been a winning team. The U15 boys (Luke Reynolds, Jack Donaghy and Robbie Fitgibbon) were 4th team. Paul Collicutt and Malcolm Hughes ran well for the masters but alas were two runners short. -

With some of our senior men absent it was always going to be a big ask to get into the medals at this final league race given their disastrous race 1 turnout. Amazingly with Dave carter (6th), Matt Barrie (7th) and Dan Stepney (15th) leading the way we managed the bronze medal. The vets performed well as ever but finished (just) in fourth spot.
The senior women had another poor turnout and although Erica Martin excelled for fifth they languish 7th out of eight first division teams and are in danger of relegation to division 2 next season.
Elsewhere Charlie Grice completed a fantastic season with another win to become individual champion with his U15 team making 5th. Under 17 boys came fourth overall with good seasons By Finn MacNally and Max Pickard. Under 15 girls were 4th and there was no under 17 team. Under 13 results were declared after three matches and the under 13 boys were top Phoenix team making silver. -

Despite a great turn out and three runners in the top ten (Josh 2nd, Dave 9th and James 10th) the senior men are still stranded in fourth spot. It seems the poor scoring in the first race of the season will be just too much to claw back. The vets continue to show great form but have slipped a place to fourth but are certainly in a position to medal on the last race. There were only two finishers in the women’s race and they are now down to seventh. The goal will be to avoid a drop to division two at Lancing. Elsewhere the U13 boys have resolutely hung on to silver position by a slender margin but the girls have slipped a few places to 10th. They finish in those positions since this age group is being scored on three races only. The U15 girls just retain third spot and the U15 boys are up to fifth with another winning run by Charlie Grice. No under 17 girls team but the boys have moved up another place to fourth. Paul Thomas, AWAD (Athletes with a Disability) Phoenix member, running with the aid of poles, managed to do 6km (3 laps) which is further than he has ever run before. Congratulations to him.
