Goodwood Cross Country Relays
Sat 28 Sep 2013
Phoenix had a very successful time at the 12th Annual Goodwood Cross Counrty Relays with the V40 A team taking the Gold medal. The U15, U17, V50, V60 mens A teams all tuck Silver, and Senior Mens A and Girls U13 teams took Bronze.
Phoenix members Max Pickard, Bob Novis, and Almi Nerukar ran the fastest overall times in their respective categories and Naomi Fonteyn also ran third fastest. A huge congratulations is also due to Archie Davis who now has the course record which was previously held by Charlie Grice (09:12). His record has stood since 2008. The official results show that Phoenix U13 Girls team finished 3rd but they were in fact 2nd over the finish line!

100km Trailwalker UK
Sun 28 Jul 2013
Tom Hopkins and Richard Moult from Phoenix tuck on the Ghurkha Trailwalk UK Challenge along with Tom's wife Sarah and close friend Barbora. Fortunately the weather held back in comparison to what was forecast meaning they only got a little soaked instead of completely drenched! The walk was unbelievably tough and a real test of mental endurance with mussels aching and sleep deprivation taking its toll, throwing in the towel must have been plaguing them especially with one of the stages being around 5km longer than expected!! Regardless, the whole team finished with the help of their dedicated support crew in a respectable 26hours 9mins. It's a truly amazing event and well worth a go!

Black Cap Handicap
Thu 18 Jul 2013
A glorious summers evening saw a small band of Phoenix runners tackle the annual Black Cap 5 handicap. A big thanks to Liz for organising this in such a busy schedule which unfortunately meant that numbers were down on previous years. Thanks to Sue for the timekeeping and Colin for the handicapping which wasn’t as accurate as previous years but all finished within 5 mins of each other. Emma easily won the handicap and posted the fastest ladies split whilst Donald stormed through the field in the fastest time but couldn’t quite catch all. Whilst we all retired to the pub for a cool down and to contemplate the beer mile next week the herd of Cows surrounding the start decided to head off for their race...some looking livelier than Andrew H had earlier.

Sat 15 Dec 2012
Shock, horror. 16 men turned up to run the senior race!. Was it the fine weather and firm going that attracted such numbers?. Like heck it was. It was cold, blustery, wet and like a swamp underfoot. Still, mustn't complain – there were some great performances leaving us well positioned in a good few categories.
U13 Girls
The star team this year. Winners on the day and consolidated as gold medal team overall. Congratulations to Naomi Fonteyn 2nd, Almi Nerurkar 4th, Chloe Watson 6th, Charlotte Matthews 8th and Izzie Whitelegg 16th.
U15 Girls
No representation!
U17/U20/Sen/Vet women
Second on the day and second overall by just 5pts, the women are well poised for promotion to division 1. They need an optimum turnout for the final race. Vets are a modest 12th. Erica Martin 19th, Megan Bradford 22nd and Paule Kremer 38th were scorers, ably backe up by Hildi Mitchell 61st and Liz Halliday 64th.
U13 boys
Well done to Jack Etherton for coming a handy 24th. With no backup that meant a lowly 14th place and the team are languishing in 10th spot overall.
U15 boys
A fine win for this well-organised team. Overall they are 4th but within easy reach of bronze. Archie Davis 2nd, Matt Berridge 8th, Oliver Johnson 11th, Harry Swindells 20th, Chris McGarry 21st, Will Russell 22nd. Great teamwork guys.
U17 men
Another terrific team effort and a wonderful front-running win by Robbie Fitzgibbon resulted in second position on the day and first place overall by just 10 points. All to play for guys. Robbie Fitzgibbon 1st, Jake Alger 5th, Sam Kitchen 9th.
U20/sen/vet men
Too many to mention everyone but turnout and performances were uniformly impressive. Ben Tickner 3rd, Daryll Hards 6th, Tom Hopkinson 8th, Jose Luceron 16th, Bruce Warren (Vet 50) 30th and Robin Fitzgibbon (V40) 43rd. scored for the senior A team. Bruce, Robin and Adam Tribe 46th scored for the vet A team. There were A, B, C, and D teams in both categories. Both teams were second on the day with the seniors comfortably in silver position overall and the vets needing to make up just 6 points to move in to silver spot at the final event. In fact the deficit of 23 points for gold is not impossible.

Sat 18 Feb 2012
Archie Davis and the under 13 boys round off a triumphant league season with another win and individual gold for Archie and gold for the team.
In the U15 boys race, Billy White had another terrific win and takes gold for the season.
The U17 boys were bronze medalists.
Max Pickard had his second win of the season in the U20/senior men's race but sadly there was an incomplete team and they finish the season well away from the medals. The vets ditto.
The women have managed complete teams throughout the season and almost managed promotion from division 2. It's looking good for next year. Erica Martin ran well for fifth. Paule Kremer ranked fourth senior woman in the individual competition.
Phoenix girls have been a bit thin on the ground but the U13 girls managed a creditable fith team ranking for the season.

A good turnout for most categories, especially senior men, women, vets and U13 boys and girls. U15s and U17s were light on entries.
U13 boys are still the star team with nine runners at Plumpton. The scorers were Archie Davis (ist), Matt Berridge (2nd) and Sam Betts (9th). This gave them the same points score as Hastings but were declared second team on a technicality. They are still in gold medal position overall though.
U13 girls had an impressive six runners with Elorah Mann (13th), Charlotte Mathews (19th) and Claudia Betts (20th) scoring for 5th place. They are 5th overall.
U15 boys. Sam kitchen (7th) and Will Russell (23rd) were 8th and are 8th overall
U15 girls had just one runner, Jody Mann (25th). The team position was 12th and remains 12th overall.
Under 17, senior and vet women. Eight runners were rewarded with 2nd place in division 2 and are 3rd overall in that division. Promotion is a distinct possibility if full teams are entered in the final two fixtures. Scorers were Catherine Bounds (14th), Anita Jones (27th) and Paule Kremer (33rd).
U17 boys. Jake Elliot ran a great 2nd but was the only Phoenix runner. 10th team on the day but, incredibly, still 3rd overall and well able to win the category with full teams out.
U20, senior and vet men had 14 runners on the start line. At one stage Phoenix were running one two and three in this race, but Ian Leitch had a bad fall and had to withdraw. Speedy recovery Ian!
Ben Tickner (1st), Josh Guilmant (3rd), Jose Luceron (25th), and then vets Donald Maclellan (51st), Daren Elliot (60th) and Gary Thayre (68th) were the scoring team coming 4th on the day and occupying 6th place overall.
The vet scorers were Donald, Daren and Gary who were 6th (5th overall).

Sussex Cross- Country League Race 1 - Goodwood
Sat 22 Oct 2011
At a sunny but windy Goodwood, where dry conditions meant flats were more prevalent than spikes, Phoenix athletes had a successful day at the first Sussex x-country league race, with four individual race wins, Mathew Berridge in the U13 boy; Billy White U15 boys; Will Durkin U17 boys and Max Pickard U20 men. There was one second, Archie Davies U13 boys and two thirds, Jake Elliot 17 Boys and Erica Martin Senior/Vet Women. Special mentions to Max, who although U20 won the senior men’s race, which had its largest field for some time, also to Erica, who in her own words had her best x-country race for some time and although third overall was first senior women. The league is not just about individual winners but also about team performance, every place matters. It was therefore pleasing to see that the fine individual successes were backed up with complete teams in all races except the U15 girls and veteran women, with team victories in the U13 and U17 boys. A more detailed report for the U13 boys can be seen below, unfortunately Isaac Wright suffered an injury in the U13 race and we wish him a speedy recovery. It was good to see complete teams in the U13 girls and senior women, who in the past have struggled to make teams. It was noted that it was up to Max and the ‘older’ men to make up the numbers in the senior men’s team, with Donald Maclellan running his first x-country race for Phoenix leading the Phoenix vets home. Donald also won the post race cake eating prize!
Well done to all those who attended, the next league races are on November 26th at Plumpton.
U13 boys report by Quenton Davis - We went into the first league match confident of a good result following the cross country relays, even with the absence of Reuben Hoyte from that gold medal winning team. With six boys available on the day we were also confident of a good B team position. Matt Berridge and Archie Davis had decided before the race to both hit the front early on and force the pace together, a tactic that saw them steadily work clear of Lewes in third place. By the last 200m the two Phoenix boys were well clear and the inform Matt Berridge took first place ahead of Archie in a last 50m sprint finish.
Ollie Johnson came home in 15th place in his maiden Sussex league match to ensure first place for the A team by six points ahead of Hastings. The B team were looking good for a mid table spot through Isaac Wright, Joe Lillee and Harry Swindells but unfortunately Isaac sustained what appears to be a pretty serious knee injury in the last third of the race. At twelve years old and a talented competition cyclist this could very likely end Isaac's cross country season; we all wish him a speedy recovery. The B team still managed a fantastic 12th position and hopefully with the three or four good runners we still have to call on we can push the B team up the table over the last three matches -

English Schools XC Champs
Sat 19 Mar 2011
Max Pickard was second scorer in the senior boys team that triumphed at the English Schools cross-country championships in Nottingham on the 19th of March. This is only the second time in the championship's 50-year history that a Sussex team has led the field.
They beat a strong Kent team into first place by just 9 points.
Other Phoenix runners involved were:
Billy White 64th Junior boys (sixth team), Will Durkin 44th Intermediate boys, Megan Lillie 215th Intermediate girls, Beth Kidger 103rd and Megan Kidger 227th senior girls.Jake Elliot was unfortunate in having to pull out of the Intermedite boy's race.

Sussex XC league (4) Lancing
Sat 12 Feb 2011
At the last cross-country league race at Lancing on the 12th February, the Under 13 boys team who have been excellent all season took first place on the day and claimed silver team medal for the season.
With seven athletes in the team all performing well, the lads really showed the rest of us how its done. Team manager Quenton Davis puts it this way: 'I think a combination of up-and-coming talent & and our commitment to attendance in numbers saw us through'
Archie Davis was first home in third place just 23 seconds off the lead. Archie was unlucky to miss out on the individual medals by a whisker. Then we had Matt Berridge 7th, Reuben Hoyte 9th, Isaac Wright 12th, Will Russell 32nd and Josh White 40th. Joe Lillie was unlucky to have to withdraw with an injury.
U15 boys featured two ever-reliable athletes Sam Kitchen 9th and Luke Reynolds 21st and place sixth for the year. There was no U17 boys team featuring at all in the results.
Charlotte Matthews ran well again for the U13s but without support the team was just 11th for the season. Jody Mann 6th, and Amber Muir 14th ran well for the under 15 girls but without a full team had to settle for 6th overall.
The senior women fielded just two runners, Liz Durman 15th and Megan Lillie (U17) 42nd. After poor representation all season they languish 5th in the second division.
The senior men again featured just two runners (James Miles an excellent 9th and Andrew Neighbour 69th) and had to depend on the vets for their scoring including 60+ runner Malcolm Kemp. They were inevitably well short of the medals in 5th place. The vet men have been reasonably represented during the season but were without their strongest team at Lancing. They held on to fifth place. Nigel Herron ran a terrific 34th and Malcolm Hughes 55th and Lance Bellers 67th were the other scorers.
We need to decide whether we want to succeed across the board in this competition next season and, if so, what can we learn from the U13 boys team?
