Awards Night 2019

Sunday 10th November 2019

The bar was set unbelievably high this year for anyone hoping to pick up one of our annual awards, with an unprecedented number of superhardworking and/or supertalented athletes and volunteers to choose from.

Breaking a club record was a sure, if supremely challenging, way to get noticed, and no less than five of our athletes achieved this feat in 2019: Charlie Da’Vall Grice bettered Steve Ovett’s Phoenix record (and former world  record) with an incredible 3:30.62 1500m, and Toby Harries (46.36 400m), Rachel Gorman (1:22:24 Half Marathon), Beth Kidger (33:57 10k) and Ian Leitch (2:18:33 Marathon) joined Charlie in our very exclusive record books. Winning a British title is another spectacular way to get noticed, so reigning British 800m Champion Spencer Thomas could also reasonably expect to make it onto our winners’ list!

U17s Milly Dickinson, Alice Wright and Poppy Palmer-Malins also made themselves impossible to overlook, with their third place at the South of England Relay Championships this year the best ever by a Phoenix team.

The competition for our volunteer/commitment awards also made picking  winners a very tough decision, though no one could dispute the worthiness of any of our winners, including for instance Coach (and Expert Jack of all Trades) Andy Bone, Women’s Captain Amelia Culshaw and Coaching Assistant Daniel Simpkin.

As last year the venue was the First Central Sussex County Cricket Ground. Music was provided by the multi-talented builder of our website Pete Goodman, and as ever Lance Bellers produce a great display of action photos from the past year as well as wielding his camera throughout the evening to capture the highlights.
