Phoenix at the Olympics

Friday 30th July 2021

The Olympics are now up and running. This time round we don’t have an individual athlete competing. Last time round Charlie Grice made the final of the men’s 1500m. At the trials this year Archie Davis 4th place and Charlie Grice 5th place just missed the spots on the team.
However we do have 3 Phoenix athletes coaching athletes at the Games. Dan Stepney, who has just been the British Endurance coach with the GB U20 team at the Euro Juniors is coach to Katie Snowden in the women’s 1500m. Mark Rowland is coach to Jake Hayward in the men’s 1500m and Jon Bigg is coach to Elliott Giles in the men’s 800m. Mark is also coach to a number of athletes from other countries including Nijel Amos and the battle for medals in the men’s 800m could realistically see Mark and Jon pitched up against each other with their athletes.

Now about Phoenix not having any athletes there….well actually we do have interest. Jonas Raess from Switzerland trained with us just a few years back for quite a time. He was a great person to have in our training group and now we look forward to cheering him on in the men’s 5000m as he runs for Switzerland. The heats are on August 3rd. Good luck Jonas.
