Mixed results in the Cross Country Championships
The Cross Country Championships was held at Bexhill on 7th January.
Heavy rain and the mud that followed did not deter the 500 runners who competed for 10 Sussex team and individual titles plus the 2 U11 races.
Phoenix attendance was down compared to other races, possibly due to it being close to school holidays, however some strong performances were seen - especially from Almi Nerurkar and the junior and senior men's teams.
Well done to the U11 athletes who represented Phoenix: Mathew Noakes (7th), Jasper Simmons (35) , Imogen Reed (7th), Molly Edwards (11th) Marnie Butler (23) Ella Baum (28th).
The U13 boys, currently 7th in the league, saw Benjamin Connolly finish 8th with James Fonteyn (24),Felix Ellis (32), Ben Power, and Finley Hawkins (34, 35).
Aoife Edwards (9th) Mekedes Berry (26) represented the girls but numbers are too low from a current placement.
The U15 girls, however, are currently 4 th in the league thanks to the efforts of Alice Wright (7th), Mia Edwards (11th), Milly Dickinson (13) and Flora Davis (26). William Carey (10th) Tom Ansell (34), and Eddie Harrison (40) ensured an 8th places team position.
Congratulations to Almi Nerurkar for finishing 1st in 20:27 some 30 seconds ahead of the field. She is now the U13, U15 & reigning U17 champion! Naomi Fonteyn also ran well to finish a respectable 6th but despite their efforts this was not enough competitors to for a team placing.
The boys team, however, finished in 3rd position. Well done to Leo Brewer (5th) Ben Martin (10th) Joel Luscombe (18), Daniel Simpkin (20).
The Junior men's race saw some confusion with he first 3 runners being mistakenly sent on an extra lap. Extra well done then to Daniel Stidder who finished in 2nd place! He was closely followed by Oliver Johnson & Reuben Hoyte (4th, 5th) to bring in the winning team.
The Senior men saw the best Phoenix turn out, taking first team place (27 pints ahead of 2nd place Crawley) with the B team in 7th. Of note was Ross Skelton & Sam Wade for finishing 3rd and 4th and Max Pickard 7th.
The Junior women was represented by only Anna Berry who finished 51st overall, 7th in her age group, whilst the Senior women saw just Bobby Searle (23), Lizzy Miles (36) and Sarah Russell (74) run to finish 9th team
