Men's Medal Muddle

Monday 7th November 2011

Phoenix men have just been awarded silver county medals as runners up in the 2010 Sussex 10K Challenge, a competition we didn't realise we were taking part in. Eleven months late has to some kind of record for SCAAA.

At the Crowborough 10K on 6 November, a county official approached Andrew Haig clutching a weighty bag of medals. It appears that ten of us had contributed to our success. With 176 points, we were just a whisker behind gold medallists Hailsham Harriers on 157 points. Think what we might have done had we known we were competing.

The medal winners were: Josh Guilmant, Bruce Faulkner, Tom Farsides, Tom Holborn, Bruce Warren, Terry Avey, Max Pickard, James Miles, Daren Elliot and Andrew Haig.

The sole aim of this challenge, put on by Sussex AA, is to improve the standard of road running in the county. This year the five races designated were:
Chichester (Feb), Heathfield (Jun), Bexhill (Sep), Crowborough (Nov) and Brighton (Nov).

Individuals score if they come within fairly strenuous finishing times. For teams it is enough to have three scorers of any standard in four of the five events. With just the Brighton 10k to come and having scored as a team at only Chichester and Crowborough, it doesn't look like we are going to trouble the leader board in 2011.
