Sussex XC Champs – the lads done good.

Tuesday 11th January 2011

With 39 Phoenix athletes competing across the board, the turnout was reasonable but it was the boys and young men that made most impact. Team of the day was the U17 men who with Charlie Grice 1st, Jake Elliot 2nd and Will Durkin 5th took team gold in style. The U13 boys (Reuben Hoyte 6th, Matt Berridge 9th and Isaac Wright 19th) won bronze just 1 pt away from silver. Joe Lillie, Will Russell and Joshua White in just his second ever race provided good support. Archie Davis would normally have been a scorer in this amazing team but, not feelig so good had to drop out on this occasion. The U15 boys boasted individual gold for Billy White and with Robbie Fitgibbon 10th and Sam Kitchen 17th were bronze medal team (the results show them, inaccurately, in fourth position). Luke Reynolds ran strongly for 24th. Finally the junior men with Max Pickard 2nd, Finn McNally 3rd and Sam Wade 8th, picked up team silver.

No medals for the girls but there were good committed runs from Charlotte Matthews and Maria Andrews (U13); Jodie Mann, Amber Murr and Eve Tree (U15); Megan Lillie (U17).

Eleven runners lined up for the senior men but with vets accounting for two of the scorers, we were just adrift of the medals. Dave Carter was 9th, Josh Guilmant 11th, James Miles 18th with Bruce Warren 34th, David Powell 39th and Chris Mills 43rd making up the team for fourth spot.

Good to see a full women's team competing and making fifth place.
The scorers were Liz Durman 15th, Erica Martin 16th, Faye McClelland 39th and Anita Jones 42nd. Liz Halliday 48th and Deb Friis 54th provided ever-reliable backup.

Thanks to Camille Burton's mother Rowenna of www.equipix.biz who provided some great shots of the U15 girls (last two on this page). Thanks to Malcolm Kemp for the remainder.
