Coasting at Crowborough

With Alison Moore now uncatchable in the Sussex Grand Prix women's individual league table, and Team PHX out of sight in both the team competitions, we coasted to another comfortable win at the Crowborough 10k last Sunday.  Coasting was just about possible for the headlong descent at the start of the race  but definitely not the right word for the overall effort required for two laps round this challenging course, with the chilly waters at Palesgate Lane Ford flowing alarmingly swiftly this year and the climb that follows as tough as ever.  As at almost every SGP race this year, we had an excellent turnout of around twenty  runners and dominated the results, with outright  wins for Todd Leckie and Alison Moore  and age category wins for Tony Rickwood, Phil Grabsky and me Paul Whelpton. Equally important in amassing our SGP points totals were the contributions of all our other runners, including the likes of Eogan McKenna (2nd V70) and the ever-reliable Will and Sarah Russell.

Lump in the throat time for me as I crossed the finishing line hand in hand with my good pal Phil Grabsky, in what was my last PHX race till who knows when, now that  I am heading off long-term to the mountains of Nerja and the woodlands of Loughborough.  Phoenix member for ever though - truly great club full of wonderful people, inspiring, inclusive, supportive.
