Sussex Cross Country League - Race 2

Tuesday 15th November 2022

An unusually firm underfoot Ardingly showground, made for a very different series of races on Saturday 12th November. Last year was ankle deep mud making the hilly course even more fun than usual, so with the sun shining this year our athletes came home with 3 first places.

Amy Harris running in her first ever cross country race and making it look easy ; steaming through the field after lap 1 and pulling away to a comfortable win. Hollie Parker, back from University in USA and living locally, she is now training with Joel's group and ran her first cross country for a couple of years after a series of injuries. Finishing 11th overall, she also took 3rd place in the Senior category. With Grace Ingles continuing her good form since joining us this autumn taking 6th, it meant that the Womens team just edged out Brighton & Hove for 3rd place in the team competition.

Beth Kidger's brilliant 16th place while guesting in the 3 lap 8k mens race showed just how well her winter training is going.

Suzy Rushforth ran "all-the-two's" with a fast 2nd lap, to take 2nd spot in the V45 category, for the 2nd consecutive race :-)

Mille-Mae Collins-Smith, Imogen Read and Jahnvi Chocksi took 4th place in the under 17 womens team competition with 8th, 14th and 27th.

The Hunter sisters Greta and Iris preceded their Dad's run with 21st and 15th in the U15's and U13's respectively. Sophie Brydon battled hard in her first ever cross country race to bring home the U15 team in 8th place out of 14 teams.

In the U11's Stella Gambie finished in a fantastic 6th place for the girls.

In the boys race Phoenix packed well with Isaac Rowland 11th, Barnaby Moyes 14th, Zach Horsfield 16th, Jesse Coleman 18th, James Oakley 26th Ted Hunt 27th, Dougie Carter 32nd and Caiden Khoury 34th.

For the Men, Archie Davis continued his winter build-up with the win after a show of strength on the hills, which gradually drew him away from the leading pack to win by more than 100metres. Under 20's Matt Geddes and Ben Connolly gamely tried to hang on to the leading pack but realised that the pace was too hot and consolidated in the next two laps, chased hard by the fast improving Jonathan Martin to take 1st, 4th and 6th place in their age category. For the Seniors, Archie was simply too quick for everyone and with Alex Garrod 17th, Luke Piper 20th, when combined with the 3 under 20's our Senior team came 2nd. Eogham McKenna and Terry Avey finished 1&2 in the Over 70's category

Miles Waterworth, despite his recent lay-off, also pulled away from the leading group to come home well in front on the U17 field with Owen Wallek again making the top 5 in his first year as an U17. Finley Jones, winner of the previous race, sufferring with mild cold, ran within himself to finish 10th. With additional members Ben Power and Raph Reed, the team finished 2nd.

For the U15's, Max Simpson led them home with 13th thanks to a fine sprint up the finishing straight. With Corbin Bailey in 16th Vince Pegley 22nd, Alex Cheeseman 30th and Jake Pursey 34th, the team finished 5th out of 18 teams in all.

Harry Collins-Smith had a tremendous race-long battle with Louie Pegley in the U13 race, with Harry edging it in 8th to Louie's 12th, both putting in big sprints at the end to take additional points off other clubs runners. Herbie Hunt, Ollie Gray Josh Hopper, Frank White, Matt and Chris Cheeseman made up the team which finished 5th of 19.
