Fun in Falmouth...The Big Seal Triathlon

Tuesday 11th October 2022

Jude Matthews tells us about her experience at the Falmouth triathlon...

Having spent much of the summer cycling around the UK and Cornwall Jude was lined up to do the Big Seal at Falmouth Triathlon with her daughter, Charlotte. Unfortunately though Charlotte had a long standing foot injury and was unable to take part.

The pictures suggest it was perfect conditions for the 600m swim, 19k bike and 5k run.

Nice flat sea for the swim...

The near sandy beach proved a welcome contrast to Brighton's pebbles, and with a run down the beach and a dive in for the first lap, followed by an exit and another run along the sand to start the second lap, it was a good spectator opportunity. Jude tells us she 'was at the back of the pack from the start but my swim was good!'.

Beautiful bike leg

The bike leg consisted of four loops of a 5km course along the seafront and Pedenis Castle and then the race was finished off with one 5k loop on the same route.

Jude felt it went well, and her 'vintage' niggles were kept at bay while she competed with a 'vintage' GB age-grouper...although she says 'I'm not really competitive but it does add a bit of fun and help drive that bit of extra performance'.

For the record Jude was 140th overall, 45th female and was very happy being 4th in her age category (Vintage)...but, she says, no where near 3rd...we'd like to add that there were a good number more than 4 in the category...she is an inspiration!

Results (mine are way back on page 3!)

Well done Jude, it looks like a lovely race...

Vintage Jude, on the run...
