Weekend preview - 11th - 13th February
Thursday 10th February 2022
Lots of Phoenix racing activity this weekend, so here is a breakdown of what's happening and where.
The Sussex Cross Country League final fixture returns to the County Championship venue of Bexhill on Saturday 12th March. We have not had much rain in the last 4 weeks so it's possible that it will not be the mudfest that it often is. Then again, who doesn't love plodding through the mud !
With 3 of our athletes having won all 3 previous events in their age groups and only 3 out of 4 results counting towards medals, the club can be certain of individual league winning medals for Katherine Haslip in the Under 11's, Owen Wallek in the Under 15's and Miles Waterworth in the Under 17's.
Iris Hunter lies in 4th with only 2 races completed and hopefully, that could motivate her to a good position to secure a possible 3rd place medal. Matthew Noakes in the U15's could sneak a medal with a good run as he has only raced twice so far and the U15 team could get themselves a 2nd place medal if they finish in front of Crawley with 4 athletes to score, so there is all to play for.
The U17 boys are lying 2nd, only 9 points ahead of Brighton and Hove, going into the final match, but will be without Miles Waterworth ( see below ) so it's going to be a battle.
Liam Dunne could secure 2nd place if he repeats his 2nd place in the second match for the Under 20's and the Men's team is looking strong to retain 2nd team spot with a big lead over Lewes.
England Athletics Age Group U17 Indoor Championships. 12th/13th Feb.
Miles Waterworth is now concentrating on the track and goes to Sheffield needing to negotiate a heat on Saturday and hopefully the final on Sunday ; if he is to match his winning performance at the South of England Championships last month where he ran a championship best of
1m 55secs.
PUL5k Elite races - Battersea Park, London. Friday 11th Feb.
Beth Kidger pulls on the red vest of Wales in the elite women's race against of host of 15minute 5k runners and will be hoping for a good time on a quick, two-lap course that's completely flat and has produced fast times in the previous races held there. Live streaming on Instagram for this one. @sportsshoes_races from 7:35pm.
