Goodwood Cross Country repoort
Wednesday 3rd November 2021
After a very long break, Cross Country league is back. The first meeting at Goodwood started as a miserable, wet and windy day, putting the tent up was a challenge. By the time the races started the sun was out and was turning into a beautiful day.
Thirteen U11 athletes started, lots of first timers meant nerves, excitement and some anxiety, and for some, the occasion was a little overwhelming. In the girls race Stella Gambie was the first Phoenix athlete to cross the line in 6th place which is pretty impressive for a first year U11. The boys race saw most of the Phoenix athletes fall at the start line and, unfortunately, Otis Lott who was in the leading group, fell again and had to pull out. Raffi Annafizz was the first Phoenix boy in 6th place.
The U13 girls put in some great performances - Isabella Paulson-Jones finished in 14th place with Elsa Olliffe not far behind in 18th place, team position 5. The boy's race was very competitive and Louis Pegley finished first for Phoenix in 19th place, team position 6.
U15 girls were in short supply with all 3 athletes needing to score, solid performances were put in by Imogen Read, Elfin Sandilands and May Powell finishing with a team position of 8.
The U15 boys gave an excellent show - Owen Wallek, leading from the gun finished first with Matthew Noakes 4th and Raphael Reed 7. These results put the team in 1st position with a commanding lead.
Sofia Akilade was the only U17 women runner and finished in 11th place. The U17 men were better represented. Miles Waterworth leading from the front to win the race, team position 4th.
A mention has to be made to the first aid provider, Phoenix athletes kept him very busy for the day, thank you.
Now then, about the tent..............
