Blackcap Handicap
Thursday 14 June 2018, another sunny evening on the South Downs with a good turnout of Brighton Phoenix plus some welcome guests. Many thanks to our time keeper Sue Hudson without whom this event could not take place, and to our trig point marshal Malcolm Kemp and supporters Paul Whelpton and Kathryn Harnett (Kathryn missed running in the event due to the joys of commuting by train to London but had a run anyway).
Despite having run 100 miles on the SDW on Saturday Andy Pumphrey returned for more and won the handicap. In entering he had sent the handicapper a photo of his post 100 mile snooze in sleeping bag in Eastbourne and begged a 55-57 minute 10K estimate. The handicapper was having none of it and gave him 50 minutes but of course that was too generous and our AP romped home a good 2 minutes ahead of the predicted time.
Alex Cruttenden was the fastest male running the course in 30:46 having set off well after the field and chasing all but 11 of them down.
Cat Bounds was fastest female in 35:16 having started in a popular pack that included 'pacer' Josh and succeeding in holding her ground to finish 8 in the handicap.
The handicapper had a hold on most of the field with many finishing quite close to the prediction with Lance Bellers finishing in exactly the predicted time. Apologies to Hildi on who the handicapper was too harsh, nonetheless in true Hildi style she battled through in her first run since Edinburgh Marathon and of course was still talking at the finish.
Well done to all and thank you for taking part. A good evening was enjoyed on the Downs and after in the White Horse.
Thanks Liz Halliday for organising & the report!
