NCAA regional cross country championships
Monday 18th November 2024
Phoenix at NCAA Regional Cross Country
Almi Nerurkar and Leo Brewer, both on athletics scholarships to universities in USA, raced in their respective regional championships last weekend. The top teams from each of the 9 regionals events go through to the NCAA Championships, a global top tier event where the leading athletes are often rewarded with professional contracts by shoe and clothing companies.
Almi raced for Georgetown University in the Mid Atlantic regional race, and moved through the field confidently, from 33rd place, finally finishing 17th and 3rd scorer ( of five to count ) for her team. Georgetown placed 2nd team and qualified for the finals in Wisconsin on 23rd November. Which will be an incredible experience, running against some of the best university athletes in the world.
Leo who is at Yale university, ran in the NCAA Northeast regional event, helping Yale to 5th team, one of their best ever finishes in a regional event. Leo, like Almi, worked his way through the field starting back in 64th postion and moving up at each k marker to finish strongly in 24th. Hopefully building his fitness to attack his 13.55 5k pb on the track during the indoor season which is about to begin.
