Phoenix Awards Night 2022: ADULT NOMINATIONS SHORTLIST

The Shortlists...

Senior Female 18-34

Alison Moore: Outstanding performances all year round, 4 race wins within the SGP. Multiple PBs across all distances. 

Amy Harris: 2x marathon PBs including a 2:46 club record in London, Ultra and Beachy Half first places.

Bella Norris: Win at UltraX 250 Wales. Sub 3:15 marathon. PBs at distances from 5k to marathon in addition to excellent multisport results.

Beth Kidger: Ran a new club 5000m record competing for Wales in this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

Sarah Roberts: Phenomenal results, PBs across multiple distances and several podium place race finishes.

F35-49

Amelia Culshaw: Marathon Des Sables 3rd W40-49 from 57 athletes 7th overall woman from 163 athletes 65th overall from total of 801 male and female athletes and winning a warm up Ultra in Surrey.

Erica Martin: Amazing duathlon/triathlon times year after year. You just have to admire her relentless training matched with competitive results.

Jacky Miller: 3 parkrun PBs this month alone, inspirational Mum who has galvanised the whole family into the club.

Sara Burns: Fantastic results throughout the year. Very strong runner and a great comeback from injury.   

Sibel Latchman: 5th in the world masters Half Marathon, 1st W45 Worthing HM + many other notable road racing results including the Great South Run.

F50-59

Lisa Ebdon: It always feels like Lisa is outside her comfort zone when running, be it taking on new races or pushing herself at track. She's improved a lot this year and competed well in many races. 

Liz Halliday: Still competing well in triathlon despite an injury that limits her ability to run and as ever is an indispensible coach and inspirational leader of the multisport team.

Sarah Russell: Some great times this year, improving on recent years, and a regular volunteer at Wednesday track sessions. 

F60

Carol Webb: Consistent parkruns and achieved 7:34/mile pace in Sussex road relays. 

Jude Matthews: Always positive and a great club mate at track, cycled all over the country this summer, and completed the Beachy Head marathon as a season finale.

Outstanding Team

Mens County XC team: Achieved an unprecedented team Gold and Silver in the county champs, where our first 12 runners collectively beat the likes of Brighton & Hove, Lewes & Chichester’s best 6.

Mens Vets SDWR team: The V40 team won this year’s race and broke the club record in the process. All were new to the race. 

Mens V55 Road Relays team: Took first place at the Aldershot Southern Champs road relays beating some very established clubs in the process.

Womens SDWR team: Breaking the club course record and 3rd place at the SDWR. Great team, positive, encouraging and supportive throughout the whole day to each other and all the other teams. 

Most Committed Team

Mens SDWR team: Despite 3 dropouts in the build-up, ran 17 mins quicker than last year’s victorious team for 2nd place, ultimately losing out in a thriller to Henfield.

Sue & Liz: Alongside Geoff P and a host of volunteer time keepers they train around 100 club members in multiple Weds night track sessions. Also the lifeblood of multisport training. 

Womens SDWR team: Breaking the club course record and 3rd place at the SDWR. Great team, positive, encouraging and supportive throughout the whole day to each other and all the other teams. 

Tough of the Track

Almi Nerurkar: After a huge training block in SA in the winter, Almi cruelly suffered a serious stress fracture in her Femur. Now back to fitness and recently won a comeback race in Madrid.

Dan Brown: Very hard worker giving 100% and is an everpresent at Weds track. Phenomenal training consistency and reaping rewards of this commitment in massive improvements and PBs.

Mel English: Hard worker, always gives 100% and produced some impressive PBs and performances this year. 

Ru Travers: Shown great improvements in his running, since consistently attending Wednesday track sessions, at all distances from 5k to marathon

Steve Atkinson: UK Masters champion, World Masters finalist and an extraordinary run to help his team win gold in Aldershot. His  grit and determination is an inspiration to Malcolm’s MD group. 

Award for commitment and enthusiasm

Alex Sawbridge: Has raced in club colours from 2 miles to 100 and has put together several huge blocks of training in the process with an insatiable appetite for Ultras.

Eogan McKenna: Always committed and enthusiastic. He always encourages others. This award could easily be renamed the Eogan McKenna Award for C&E!

Jess Stribbling: The heart of a burgeoning senior ladies presence at local running events and she’s created momentum with the whole group with her infectious energy.

Martina Tiziani: She’ll train and enter and compete, irrespective of her chance of winning. Always positive towards others, cheerful and very committed.

Pete Goodman: An absolute essential member of the track team with his commitment and motivation of others, consistent pacing and helping with timing.  

Volunteer of the Year Award

Chelsey Hallam: Formed a hugely successful women’s team ethos and is at the centre of much that goes on at the club.  

Geoff Pike: As well as coaching on Wednesdays he is becoming increasingly important to the club in multisport and making sure news items are uploaded and our achievements are celebrated. 

Liz Halliday: Phenomenal support to the club multiple days a week and at the centre of every activity for the Tri group. Always giving encouragement and advice. Out there coaching rain or shine. 

Mike Scofield: As well as coaching, does a huge amount of administrative results and news stories work at all hours and always available on any query. Completely irreplaceable for all he does.

Sue Hudson: Indispensable coach on Wednesdays and having a huge impact on swim coaching helping a number of members new to swimming improve enormously over the course of the year. 

Best Newcomer

Alex Sawbridge: Hugely committed since switching from Lewes to join Phoenix and got a top 5 in the Moyleman marathon amongst several other hugely impressive performances on the trails.

Amy Harris: Almost unbeatable on the trails across half, mara and ultra distances and excelled in the London marathon.

Bella Norris: Outstanding first year with the club with PBs at all distances, UltraX Wales win, sub 3:15 marathon, great Half Iron result and being a part of the Weds track sessions and Ladies SDW team.

Charlie Penrose: Moved across the city from B&H and achieved a Championship start time of 2:38 in the London marathon. Huge part of the Monday group from the moment he joined the club.

Llewelyn Thomas: Won his 1st race in Phoenix colours and already mixing it in the Lewes Downland and Sussex XC.

Multisport athlete of the year

Bobby Searle: Excellent triathlon performances including Estonia Half Ironman showing her to have enormous potential in multisport.

Danielle Simpson: One of the best swimmers at the club, bronze medal in first triathlon (standard distance at Bewl). Huge potential in the sport. 

Erica Martin: Once again competing very well in duathlon mixing it with some of the best in the country. 

Nina Atherton: Some top performances and one in particular after an horrific injury at the velodrome.

Multisport outstanding achievement

Chelsey Hallam: Third place in her debut triathlon at Dawlish. 

Danielle Simpson: For her third place in the Standard Triathlon at Bewl.

Erica Martin: Several medals once again in duathlon. 

Kirsty Bunning: Cycled 1000 miles or more across Europe to Istanbul - not strictly multisport but inspiring to the group and undoubtedly an outstanding achievement! 

Sam Wade: Winning B&H sprint Tri in a thoroughly commanding performance.

Female best performance road or XC

Amelia Culshaw: Completed the 231.1km Marathon des Sables finishing 7th female and 3rd in her age category in a time of 30:07:29.

Amy Harris: Broke the club marathon record with a superb 2:46 in London, splitting miles like a metronome in the process (and acknowledging all her fans whilst doing it).

Bella Norris: Winning the Wales UltraX 250. 

Bobby Searle: Exceptional 14:24 anchor leg in the Goodwood relays which was comfortably the quickest female time of the day.

Tara Bage: Moving up from her usual track distances to record a very good PB of 35:47 in the Valencia 10k in January.

Female best performance Track

Alice Wright: Alice’s 4:18.74 PB for 1500m places her 1st in the UK U20 rankings, 2.5 seconds clear of her closest competition and in sight of the World Juniors QT of 4:17.

Beth Kidger: 15:37.47 PB for 13th place in the Commonwealth Games 5,000m final. A truly outstanding achievement,

Coach of the Year

Bruce Warren: Coaching Miles through an almost perfect season and continuing to be a hugely influential figure to our next generation of stars.

Joel Kidger: Guiding Beth to a PB at a major Championships and remarkable commitment across the club and through the new FMG project initiative.

Liz Halliday: Outstanding coaching contribution to the club several days a week in all weathers.  

Malcolm Kemp: Fabulous work with VM50+ track group demonstrated by an array of medals and PBs, which is helping to attract some of the best 50 plus athletes in the area to the club. 

Bruce Faulkner

Gary White: Has completed an epic number of marathons and ultras this year, always performing well. Playing an increasingly important role in the club. 

Pete Goodman: Wonderful training partner in the Weds sessions, social glue for the long run group on the Downs, general club lynchpin.

Sibel Latchman: Getting faster and faster at all distances and is the first person to help others through their sessions.

Stuart Roberts: Voracious appetite for races on all terrains, multi-team medal winner and recent Wales Master!

Tom Hooper: Stepped into SDW relay duty at very short notice and completed a strong HM training block, usually solo, at some unsociable times of day.

Best Comeback

Chelsey Hallam: Disciplined return after 4 months out with PF to 3rd place in first ever triathlon and back down to sub 20 minute 5k. 

Flora Davis: After being injured for almost 2 years, has been committed and dedicated to training for a long time and has come a long way since the start of injury in 2020. 

Jim Lathbury: Returning back to track and trail running despite the advice of multiple consultants after a severe bike accident.

Jon Clays: Suffered a stress fracture and then a broken shoulder in a bike accident (only riding because of the aforementioned stress fracture) yet bounced back incredibly to post 2:35 in Boston.

Tom Hooper: Illness curtailed first 6 months of year but helped A-team to SDW Relay silver and 74:13 half marathon PB in Cardiff.

The coveted awards...

Male best performance in road and XC

Finn McNally: Set a new event record with a wonderful 29:48 at our Phoenix 10km.

George Mills: New 3:35.30 1500m PB in Berlin which is also a European Champs A standard time, and a string of world level performances both indoors and out since relocating to Liepzig.

Jon Clays: Outstandingly paced 2:35:59 in Boston, where Heartbreak Hill was not allowed to live up to its moniker.

Sam Garrity: After several near-misses posted a serene sub-3 marathon where everything came together on the streets of Berlin.

Simon Heath: Securing a podium place in an enthralling, wind-affected, battle in the Brighton Half Marathon.

Male best performance in track and field

Adrian Haines: After returning from a nasty bout of Covid is back to his best…including 1st British Masters 1,500m 4th World Masters 1,500m Champs, key member of the Aldershot relay team.

George Mills: Set a new PB of 3:35.30 over 1500m in Berlin securing a European Championships A-Standard in the process.

Miles Waterworth: Completed an English Schools double (Indoors and Out) with a 1:53.94 championship performance at Sportcity.

Phil Grabsky: Huge improvement and dedication to the track middle distances. Excellent results at recent relays.

Steve Atkinson: Inspirational achievements in World 800 and 1500 finals. Led the V55s to team gold in Southern Road Relays. Ranked 3rd in UK at (V55) 800m and high up at mile & 1500m. 

Senior Male

Alex Garrod: 2:35 marathon PB in Berlin to cap off an excellent year including a new 10km best of 33:19.

Ash Dorrington: Outstanding 2:33 marathon PB on a challenging Chester course as well as PBs in 5k, 10k and the half.

Finn McNally: Consistent top-class performances in XC, track and road, representing the Phoenix colours with distinction in the process.

George Mills: Cementing his status as a world level 1500m man with a series of top performances both indoors and out.

Simon Heath: 3rd place in the Brighton Half in an absolute thriller and broke course records at Rye and the Bewl 15.

Male 40-49

Austen Hunter: Top 3 finish in the 90km Ultravasan in Sweden and member of victorious V40 SDW team.

Jon Clays: 2:35 marathon on the iconic Boston course and new PBs at every distance from 3000m-HM on top.

Sam Garrity: Finally got his sub-3 marathon in Berlin and could not have been more deserving after several near misses.

Stuart Roberts: Team medal winner in the county XC, Road Relays and SDW Relay, also got his first Wales Masters vest.

Tim Clarke: 2x marathon PBs including 2:45 in London, and gold medal in the County XC and SDW teams.

Male 50-59

Adrian Haines: 1st British Masters 1,500m 4th World Masters 1,500m UK ranking: 2nd track mile 2nd 1,500m, 5th 800m. Excellent results at recent relays. 

Gary White: So many races mainly marathons and ultras, including the legendary Comrades Ultra! He is also becoming an important member of the club, organising new kit lines and Thursday club runs. 

Geoff Pike: Commitment to Club in various ways and solid performances across all disciplines. Excellent result at recent relays. 

Paul Wishart: Highly impressive Hastings half marathon first in his class and in a number of other events with stunning times. Paul continues to amaze with great times at various distances this year.

Steve Atkinson: Inspirational achievements in World 800 and 1500 finals. 6th fastest GB V55 800m of all time and ranked 3rd in 2022. Led the V55s to team gold in Southern Road Relays.

M60+

Andrew Haig: Lewes 10 miles, incredible performance and a great 10k time earlier this year.

Andy Pumphrey: UTMB and various other top Ultra performances. 

Eogan McKenna: Always willing to turn out to make up a team and encourage everyone else at the event. Great commitment all round.  

Paul Whelpton: One of only 6 Phoenix athletes in 2022 in overall UK top 10 ranking for their age. Still our top >60 male athlete with sub 20:30 5k/parkruns and 72mins for 10 miles.

Terry Avey: Great consistency
