Phoenix parkrun round-up (17th September 2022)

Monday 19th September 2022

Welcome to this week's Phoenix Parkrun Round-Up in which we take a look at the achievements of club members at parkrun from the weekend. From PBs to milestones to parkrun tourism, this is a chance to celebrate both personal achievement and the joy of running!

If your achievement isn't listed below then that likely means you don't have Brighton Phoenix listed as your club on parkrun! We use the parkrun website, the Club Strava page and www.thepowerof10.info to search out performances and stories. If you have an achievement you want to shout about then reach out to Billy Gates on WhatsApp.

We're particularly interested in receiving photos of Phoenix runners at parkruns to include in these articles too - PB or not!

Personal Bests

Congratulations to 9 club members on achieving parkrun PBs this week!

  • Finn Aggarwal: 20:03 (Brighton & Hove)
  • Barry Blackwell: 19:20 (Preston Park)
  • Billy Gates: 22:32 (Worthing)
  • Jack Hayward: 16:50 (Worthing) achieving his first sub-17 parkrun!
  • Joe Kelly: 19:35 (Brighton & Hove)
  • Tommy Knight: 18:19 (York)
  • Sibel Latchman: 19:27 (Hove Promenade) who also marks her 50th parkrun this week
  • Simon Lowe: 19:05 (Hove Promenade)
  • Jacky Miller: 20:09 (Hove Promenade)

Simon says of his parkrun: "I'm delighted with my new PB! The almost perfect conditions on the Prom this week certainly helped. I'm currently training for the Dublin Marathon at the end of October, and have been hoping to set a few PBs over the shorter distances. Now my aim is to take just a few more seconds off to finally get under the 19 minute mark!" He adds: "The Wednesday track sessions have really helped. The Phoenix coaches have been brilliant, thank you!"

Barry tells us about his performance: "I decided to give myself 'til the end of the year to go for sub-19 as not been focusing on 5K distance. It's all been about 800m and 1500m. I also wanted to try and run without my Garmin and just feel the pace which felt great. The aim was to just see what happened and try to enjoy it! Didn't know time until received email/text... 19:40! 14th overall and 1st in age category M55. Later found out (thanks Billy) that official time was 19:20! A new PR and 5K PB!"

Notable Mentions

  • Simon Heath both came in first and topped the age grading at Peacehaven parkrun (16:03 - 82.14%)
  • Freya Hughes was 1st female finisher at Preston Park parkrun
  • Congratulations to Nigel Herron on his 100th parkrun, check out his race report below!

Nigel reflects on his parkrun century at Holyrood in Edinburgh: "A bit more scenic, running around the crags at the bottom of Arthur's seat, than Hove Prom. 1.5k climb to start, but nothing too challenging. Trotted round, not worrying about time, age-grading or position as the aim was to get from 99 to 100 after a summer of injuries, so job done."
