Grand Master
The Masters Grand Prix at Lee Valley on Sun 19 Aug saw an attempt at the V50 4x800m world record. Nigel Herron gives us an eye witness account:
“The team featured our very own Steve Atkinson.
I watched the race unfold from the 200m bend where I was calling out splits.
The record was a tough ask (average 2.06/runner) but the V50s were always in the hunt, chasing the V45 squad
Steve ran a strong 3rd leg, handing over to Adrian Haines who ran fantastically, chasing down the V45 team
Their time of 8:25.87 is a new British record by 14 seconds but the World record (held by a Swedish squad)was missed by a tantalising 8/100ths of a second.
It was quite windy down the home straight but well done to: Gary Burnett (2:05), David Cowlishaw (2:06), Steve Atkinson (2:08),Adrian Haines (2:06).
Earlier in the meeting Phil Grabsky (20:13.32) & Andrew Haig (21:49.34) ran the 5000m.
Nigel Herron ran his usual (?foolish) double:
800m in 2:37.0 and 1500m in 5:21.10
Full results should be available presently”
