Master Class
The Sussex Cross Country Masters, held this year at Lancing, saw some good individual and team results.
Held on a brisk Saturday afternoon, Phoenix saw no fewer than 30 runners enter the hilly course. Starting at the allotments, the course involved a steady climb before curving up through a wooded area, passing some beautiful frost patches, to finish in a steep down hill sprint. All the races included a few laps of this course so the key was to not over cook the first hill!
First off were the 050 and 60 men. Completing a 5 mile course it was Paul Whelpton who deserves a mention for finishing 2nd 060, 8th overall in a storming 33.34. The 050 men came 5th in the team standings and 4th and 7th for the 060.
The Phoenix women continued their resurgence with 8 runners taking on the 4 mile course and the 035 team finishing in 6th position.
The 040 men rounded up the day, tuning a 6 mille course. Dave Carter was the fastest Phoenix man, finishing 7th overall. They took 3rd and 8th in the team standings.
