What went on up the Downs (Part 3)

Wednesday 8th June 2016

Silver Bs

After weeks of changes to the team, we finally put together five men and one women (Anita Jones) who only had 2 weeks to recce the legs she was allocated, the worst being leg 18 which meant a trip to Winchester and back.

The team met at Withdean Car Park at 5.00am and proceeded to Beachy Head picking up our driver Sue Hudson and Anita in Denton on the way for our 6.30am start.

First off was Pete Goodman, a first timer to this event who had recced this difficult leg over the Seven Sisters several times before the day. He was followed by Jon Wright from Exceat to Bo Peep, Malcolm Kemp from there to Itford Farm, Richard Thompson (also a first timer) to Newmarket on the A27, Andrew Neighbour to Ditchling Beacon and Anita to Saddlescombe Farm, This was the order for the rest of the day with everyone finishing close to their projected target times. On route we kept on meeting up with the women's team at the various change over points and this towards the end of the day developed in to a competition to see who was going to be the fastest of the two teams.

To cap a truly great day we were totally surprised when they announced we had won the B team Silver medals as we didn't start with any other B teams, so had no idea how all the other 8 teams entered were doing in terms of times.

This is a great and challenging event to participate in not only as a team but also as an individual running three legs throughout the day. It is always amazing after doing the first leg how quickly the time goes before you are out on the second and then the third.

Thank you Malcolm for this report.
