Phoenix Masters


Following a revised course due to the mud, the Sussex Masters at Lancing took place on Saturday 23rd January.

For over 35s only the Masters holds 3 races; women's race (over 35, 45, 55) of 4 miles, Men over 50 & 60 (5 miles) & Men over 40 (6 miles).


The Phoenix o60 Men showed the field who were the Masters with Paul Whelpton holding on to his individual title, winning in 34:49. Although the team lost the title to Chichester this year they finished a respectable second. The o50 men finished fifth in their title chase. The race saw Nigel Herron (o50) finish first of the Phoenix runners followed by Paul Whelpton (o60), Phil Hampshire (o50), John Marenko (o50), Phil Grabsky (o50), Andrew Haig (o60), Malcolm Kemp (o60), Ro Harrington (o50), Colin Simpson (o60) and Rik Taub (o60).


The o40 Men took bronze with Donald Maclellan, Matt Greenall, Paul Wishart, Tom Sanderson, and Andrew Neighbour finishing in that order.


The women had 2 teams in the running for the o35 & o45 categories. The race saw Anita Jones (o35) own it finishing a flying first out of the Phoenix women followed by Kathryn Harnett (o35), Louise Gregory (045), Hildi Mtchell (o35), Liz Halliday (o45) and Jude Mathews (o45). All the Phoenix women took pride in winning their sprint finishes with other runners around them. The o35 team finished 7th in the title.
