Championship Charlie

Tuesday 1st September 2015

At the age of just 21 Charlie Grice made his first but undoubtedly not his last World Championship final. Charlie lined with the slowest PB of the 12 finalists but still managed to finish 9th. He was in contention with 200m left and it is surely just a matter of time before he closes down on the leaders.

So lets look at some more stats... Charlie was just 2 seconds off winning the race, came ahead of the current Olympic silver medalist and was just one place behind the current World Championship silver medallist. Charlie was also not just the only Brit in the final but also the only European. His 9th place is the best by a British man in a 1500m Worlds final since 2007 when Andy Baddely also came 9th.

In the final there were 6 men with faster PBs than Seb Coe and another 2 more faster than Steve Ovett. Coe and Ovett were once the great gods of UK middle distance. When Steve Cram was 19 he came 8th in the Olympic 1500m final. When Steve Ovett was 20 he came 5th in the Olympic 800m final but got knocked out in the semi finals of the 1500m. When Seb Coe was 21 he came 3rd in the European 800m championships.

Our Charlie is right where he needs to be right now...onwards and upwards!
