Musical Chairs at the AGM
Thursday 26th March 2015
The club AGM on 11 March was packed out with those wanting to thank Paul at his final appearance as chairman but also to welcome Mike Townley as the incumbent.
Other club business was swiftly dealt with all of the committee happy to stand for reelection. We were waiting for the main event and it turned into a multimedia spectacular. OK it was one slide show and one projected video clip but we were impressed!
First off was Paul who had put together a slide sequence showing the history of the club right up to the current crop of track stars. There were quite a few of the man himself only with lots of hair. Who knew? It is generally agreed that in his eleven years of tenure Paul has revived the fortunes of the club in no uncertain terms. Take a look at the heartfelt messages in the booklet presented to him at the end of the evening. Keep a hankie handy though! The good news is that Paul will continue as a highly-regarded coach.
Mike Townley, has been an active member of Phoenix for seven years. Apart from being a fine distance runner, he is a sports lawyer much in demand for international organising committees including Olympic. Unlike Paul, he isn't a coach but his knowledge of how sports organisations work is second to none. Unable to get back from Germany for the AGM, he sent a video message impressive in its tone of measured ambition for the club. If you haven't yet met Mike, he will be running for the over 50 men at the Sussex Road Relays on Easter Saturday. Come and say hello.
