Brownlees inspire Phoenix Athletes

Toby Lewis and Charlotte Matthews both competed in the Super-Sprint Youth event (15-18yrs) at the Brownlee Triathlon (South) at Petworth Park on Sunday 15th June.

The event was changed at very short notice (the night before) to a duathlon due to the water conditions in the lake.

There was one Youth wave for both male and female - Charlotte and Toby both managed to get in a good place on the start line

Toby set off at a great pace over the grass paths around the lake for the 2km run. Both came in to T1 in good positions, with Toby managing to slap a ‘high 5' to the Brownlee brothers who were watching the youth wave.

The 16km cycle ride out on some closed roads and quite lanes was non-drafting and both Charlotte and Toby maintained good placing as they came into T2.

Out on the final 2.5km run there were some interesting developments with some of the athletes taking a more scenic route than necessary - a lesson to be learnt here is that studying the route maps before the event can pay off. A number of the athletes missed a turn resulting in a slightly longer run and quite a few seconds - I think Toby may have been one of these judging by his 2nd run time. Toby finished in 6th place in the Youth category (and 6th male youth).

Charlotte took the right route and came home in 8th place overall in the Youth category but more importantly first Youth female. (with a couple of hours to wait until prize giving she came to terms with the way things had turned out - there were a few female athletes who took the wrong route costing them higher placing above Charlotte)

A place on the podium with Johnnie and Alistair on either side put the biggest smile on her face. "Ohhhhh!"

Dame Kelly Holmes competed in one of the Super-Sprint waves only slightly beating Charlotte in the female Super-Sprint combined results (placing 1st and second)
