Juniors lead the way in Southern Road Relay Championships

Tuesday 2nd October 2012

The U13 Boys Team, under the stewardship of Quinton Davis, has been the dominant force in Sussex over the past year. As the team move into the U15 age group, they chose to venture into the SEAA championships for the first time. They committed themselves fantastically to the task in hand, coming home in 27th position, with strong runs from Matt and Archie, who anchored the team with the fastest leg of the day. All 4 of the guys are sure to make big improvements, being at the bottom of the age group.

Harry Swindells 11:51 33 38
Ollie Johnson 11:56 34 35
Archie Davis 10:20 27 8

The U17’s team is looking ominously good this year, with new member Jake Alger joining the already established names of Will Thompson, Sam Kitchen and Sussex Number 1 Billy White. They did not disappoint on the day, with a very strong run from Jake on opening leg, setting the team up for a 12th place finish. They are sure to improve on in this later in the year, after all having a long and well deserved end of season break.

The Senior Men’s team were looking to qualify for the National Championship and needed a top 25 place to secure this. Cutting it right to the wire, they managed a 24th place finish. Josh Guilmant had the task of leading the team off, in what could only be described as monsoon like conditions, with parts of the course having puddles that resembled lakes – a far cry from the sunny conditions that the juniors were treated to on the Saturday. Josh came home in 13th position, managing to out-dip his less-than-fit training partner Ben Tickner (18.52) running for his first claim club. Dan Stepney took over on second leg, to put in one of his best performances over the Aldershot course, as he looks to build a strong base for the season. Dave Carter made a welcome return to the team, after last competing in the Sussex Champs back in January. He showed that he has lost none of his strength, with a solid run. Ian Leitch then cut loose, to run a cracking 19.01 and move the team up 10 places. This after being out all summer with a foot injury. James Miles kept the team in the mix for a national place with Finn McNally doing just enough to bring Team Phoenix within the top 25.
