Swimming Sessions

SWIM TRAINING UPDATE

We have had a successful start to the reintroduction of swimming training, with weekly coached sessions taking place at 5.30 at Roedean pool since February.  Feedback from participants has rated the sessions highly.  While the board as agreed to continue subsidising these sessions in order to develop and promote the multisport side of the club, we hope to see a bigger uptake from members so that the session remains viable.

Roedean training sessions

The Roedean sessions are going to continue at the same time for another month, with the last one taking place on 17th May.  Here is a brief summary of the sessions planned for the next three weeks:

3rd of May: pacing

10th of May: preparation for open water/race scenarios

17th of May: time trials before you are all let loose on the world of triathlon.

Useful information:

-        The session starts at 5.30pm sharp so please arrive early in order to change and be at the poolside on time.

-        As well as the coaches the sessions will be attended by a lifeguard.

-        There is parking next to the pool, and the Brighton cycle lane goes most of the way to the venue.

-        Please come prepared for team-work in your lanes.

-        Please bring water bottles and fins and bands if you have them.

-        There is usually a little time for you to experiment and work on your own drills as part of the warm-up or cool down.

-        Current charge is £5 as a contribution to pool hire costs.

-        Training is for Brighton Phoenix club members; however we may be able to accommodate non-member "plus-ones" if there is space. Please contact us in advance to discuss this.

-       We are not able to provide swimming lessons and so need to ask for a minimum swimming ability. This should be to be able to swim at least 200m without stopping in a forward facing stroke, ideally front crawl.

Pells Pool training sessions

With the days lengthening and the weather warming up we will then take training over to the Pells pool in Lewes, where it will run at the later time of 7.30 pm on alternate Thursdays throughout the summer.  The dates for these sessions are:

24th May

7th June

21st June

5th July

19th July

2nd August

16th August

30th August

We are also hoping to secure the 6th of September for a final session before returning to Roedean on 13th September - to be confirmed.

The sessions at Pells will provide an opportunity for doing some different sorts of training.  This beautiful lido is one of the few 50 yard pools still functioning, and this combined with the open air setting - and the somewhat colder water - means the sessions will have more of an "open water" feel to them - important for those training for open water events and triathlons.  The size of the pool means we can have a lot of swimmers in each lane without any risk of people getting in each other's way.

As well as a standard coached swim covering technique, endurance and open-water skills, participants can also opt for a swim/run combo or brick session as there is a park next to the pool.  We will aim to organise a post-training club social in the pool's grounds on one of the nights.

Here is some other useful information:

-        The Roedean session starts at 7.30 pm sharp so please arrive early in order to change and be poolside when we start.

-        As well as the coaches the sessions will be attended by a lifeguard.

-        There is parking next to the pool; and it is a short walk or cycle ride from the train station.  We can arrange car-sharing for those who need lifts.

-        Swimming wetsuits are strongly recommended, unless you are an experienced cool water swimmer.

-        The first few sessions will last one hour, and we may extend to 90 minutes as the season progresses.

-        We anticipate charging members around £5-£6 for the coached one hour session as a contribution to pool hire costs.

-        Training is for Brighton Phoenix club members; however as with the Roedean sessions we may be able to accommodate non-member "plus-ones" if there is space. Please contact us in advance to discuss this.

-       At the Pells session we can accommodate swimmers from age 14 up.  Any swimmer under 18 should have written permission from a parent or carer, and any under 16 should be accompanied at the pool by a parent or guardian.  Please contact us to discuss if you have a slightly younger competent swimmer and we will discuss with the team.

-       We are not able to provide swimming lessons and so need to ask for a minimum swimming ability. This should be to be able to swim at least 200m without stopping in a forward facing stroke, ideally front crawl.

-       Pull buoys, kick boards, fins and bands may be used in some sessions so please bring these if you have them.

-       We recommend bringing a flask of warm drink, a snack and warm clothes for after the swim.

We are happy for swimmers to just turn up although if you are definitely interested it would be helpful for us to know who you are and a bit about you in advance.  Please let Matt Greenall know (greenallphoenix@gmail.com); you can also address any questions to him.

As the sea warms up club members may, as in previous years, do informal group sea swims or arrange to swim in local open water events.  We encourage you to talk to clubmates at the Roedean and Pells sessions to make plans!

Swimming events

As well as open water swims during triathlons an increasing number of club members is taking part in open water events.  Getting used to group or competitive open water swims can be a good way of preparing yourself for multisports.  Many of the events below provide different distances. Why not take the plunge?

-        Weirwood reservoir pop up swims - Tuesdays from 4:30pm and Saturdays from 8:30am. Begins on 24 April.  These are not races but a good intro to open water.

-        Ardingly Swim the Lake; 750, 1500 and 3000m 20 June

-        River Arun 3.8km (Ironman distance) swim 23 June

-        Palace to paddle swim 2500m (Paddle round the pier) 7 July

-        Swim round the pier 1500m (Paddle round the pier) 8 July

-        River Adur 5km swim 1 September

-        Worthing WellWorth swim 1.5k and 3k dates tbc (usually September)

Club members have participated in most of these in the past so please ask around if you want to know more.
